Masculine gender role norms: Understanding the conformity of domestic violence perpetrators

Abstract:
The Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory (CMNI) was completed by 35 men who were required by the court or another authority to attend treatment for domestic violence perpetrators due to allegations of spousal abuse. The men's scores were compared to those obtained from a sample of men who participated in the norming of the CMNI. The results of this study indicate that men who have committed domestic violence may view themselves as conforming to society's standards of masculinity less than men who have not necessarily committed domestic violence. Implications for the treatment of abusers as well as suggestions for future research are included.
